Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
